From the screen to the road: How did subscriptions become a new lifestyle?

Payment Pattern Change: From Instant Purchase to Monthly Subscriptions

The rapid shift in consumer preferences has raised vital questions among economists about why individuals choose to pay monthly rather than pay, and whether this trend represents economic flexibility or a long-term burden on household budgets.

Flexibility instead of commitment

Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, Professor of Economics at Cairo University, said that the new generation of consumers prefer flexibility to ownership, where the idea of buying a car or a film library is no longer as tempting as before, but access to service when needed is the basis. Service subscriptions allow consumers the freedom to enter and exit without the need for significant upfront investment, in line with the fast-paced lifestyle of the digital age.

Ghoneim added that the change reflected a new economic philosophy that reflected the abandonment of the idea of ownership as a symbol of stability or social status. He pointed out that this trend stems from the decline in confidence of young people in long-term investments due to fluctuations in the labor market and global economic crises, which makes them inclined to pay-for-service model only without additional burdens.

He also noted that the "experience" culture takes priority over "acquisition", which contributes to changing multiple aspects of the economy, as consumers constantly compare services and move between platforms easily, forcing companies to improve their offerings to maintain customer loyalty.

Opportunity for Companies

On the other hand, companies see the subscription model as a distinct opportunity. This model turns customers into a continuous source of income instead of selling a one-time product. Mohamed Hegazy, a marketing officer at an automotive company in Egypt, explained that the monthly subscription services have begun to enter the automotive market, allowing customers to subscribe and pay a fixed amount covering use, maintenance and insurance, which is commensurate with the needs of young people and entrepreneurs.

Contradictory economic dimensions

Despite the potential benefits, there are those who believe that this trend may turn into a financial burden; Dalia Jouda, from the Consumer Protection Agency, stressed that monthly subscriptions may drain consumer income unconsciously, as some find themselves paying for a variety of services and discover that monthly payments are equivalent to long-term fixed installments. She stressed the importance of financial awareness to reduce the temptations of ease and flexibility.

The Future of the Contribution Economy

Economic reports indicate that the subscription-based services market is on the rise, especially as it enters new areas such as clothing and healthcare. While this model looks promising, it needs greater regulation to protect consumers and keep convenience from turning into exploitation.

Among those who see it as a modern choice that offers flexibility, and those who see it as a commitment that drains income, the subscription economy remains a mirror of modern life shifts, where the idea of ownership versus a culture of use declines when needed.
