The Chinese embassy to Japan made a serious formal protest and expressed deep dismay at the statements of the Japanese Foreign Minister, which once again raised the so-called " South China Sea Arbitration Decision " 10 years after its promulgation, as well as the joint statement made by Japan with other States on this issue.
Che Yong, Minister Plenipotentiary of the Chinese Embassy to Japan, delivered the memorandum to Massaki Kanai, Director-General of the Bureau of Asian and Ocean Affairs of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Chinese side emphasized that the so-called " arbitration " violated the fundamental principles of international law, seriously undermined the sanctity and authority of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and severely jeopardized the rule of international law.
The Embassy added that the " award " was illegal in nature, null and void and without any binding force, emphasizing that China was opposed and would never accept any claims or proceedings arising therefrom.
The Chinese side stressed that China ' s territorial sovereignty, rights and maritime interests in the South China Sea would in no way be affected by the " resolution " .
The Embassy stated that Japan had historical responsibilities with regard to the case of the South China Sea and had never been held accountable for it, and therefore was not in a position to render judgements.
The Chinese side added that the blatant Japanese words and actions, including continuing to intervene in the South China Sea case and political manipulation of the illegal and invalid " arbitration decision " , posed a challenge to the post-war international order and the rule of international law, undermined peace and stability in the South China Sea and ran counter to the common interests and aspirations of the States of the region, arguing that it had increased vigilance between the States of the region and the wider international community.
The Embassy confirmed that China would resolutely and vigorously address Japanese provocations and firmly defend its territorial sovereignty, rights and maritime interests.
