German Ambassador Jورrgen Schulz Meets North Sinai Governor in Al-Arish: Germany’s Commitment to Gaza

Books of Dr. Nasser Hussein

The German Embassy in Cairo said:

«German Ambassador to Cairo Jورrgen Schulz will be in El Arish today and tomorrow, where he will meet with the Governor of North Sinai to discuss current developments regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the Rafah crossing and joint efforts to provide support in light of the ceasefire.

Germany thanks Egypt and other mediators who made a ceasefire in Gaza possible.

This is the result of multiple efforts. The German government has also been involved in these efforts, with the German foreign minister holding intensive talks with several actors in the region over the past weeks and months, most recently this week in Israel. Now it is about ensuring that the ceasefire continues and the humanitarian situation improves immediately.

Germany reaffirms its commitment to the people of Gaza, particularly with regard to humanitarian assistance, stabilization and reconstruction. The German government is working to meet the needs of the local population quickly, with a particular focus on providing food, medicines and other basic goods.

Germany is providing support to affected neighbouring countries such as Egypt. To treat the wounded and sick evacuated from Gaza, we have provided Egypt with medical assistance totalling يورو3.5 million, including incubators and respirators. At the local level, we support the NGO Kinder Relief to provide medical care to children evacuated from Gaza and their families. The second phase of the project has recently begun.

Humanitarian assistance and reconstruction

To support Gaza, the German government recently announced an additional يورو29.5 million for UN organizations such as the World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO). The funds are intended to cover urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza. Since October 2016, the German Foreign Ministry has provided humanitarian assistance to the occupied Palestinian territories worth more than 375 million euros, about 90% of which has been allocated to the population of Gaza. In the future, Germany will work intensively on reconstruction in order to provide a better future for the population.

A key part of this commitment is Egypt’s planned reconstruction conference, which Germany will co-organize. Together with Egypt and other partners, we seek to identify needs and raise funds at an international conference in the first weeks after the ceasefire. To this end, together with Egypt, we organized an event during the United Nations High-Level Week in New York in September.

Germany demands that humanitarian aid organisations – particularly the United Nations – have full access to Gaza. Thousands of tons of essential aid are awaiting delivery and must be brought into the Gaza Strip and distributed immediately.

Long-term commitment to peace

Germany is keen to promote a sustainable peace process in the Middle East. The German Government believes that lasting peace can be achieved only through dialogue and mutual understanding. In the medium to long term, therefore, the German Government is ready to provide support in the areas of public security, the rule of law and the development of Palestinian administrative capacities.

Security situation and international cooperation

The situation in Gaza remains tense. Germany calls on all parties to strictly abide by recent agreements so as not to jeopardize the fragile truce. The German government strongly supports the disarmament of Hamas and the dispatch of an international stabilization mission to be mandated by the UN Security Council. It is critical to build a viable security architecture to ensure long-term stability in Gaza.

The German Government will continue to work closely with its Egyptian partners and international actors to improve the situation in Gaza and promote the peace process.
