Dr. Magdy Badran, a member of the Egyptian Society for Allergy and Immunology, revealed the real reasons behind the rapid spread of viral infections and colds by winter, stressing that wrong human behaviors play a bigger role than low temperatures per se.
Badran explained, in a telephone intervention on the program "This Morning", broadcast on Extra News channel, that the decline in immunity in this chapter is due to several environmental and behavioral factors, most notably the lack of exposure to the sun, which leads to low levels of vitamin D in the body, in addition to high humidity and low temperature.
Indoor Trap
The immunologist warned of the common habits associated with staying indoors for long periods of time and confined spaces poorly ventilated to escape the cold, and noted that the lack of good ventilation leads to the accumulation of pollutants and increased concentration of carbon dioxide, creating a fertile environment for the spread of viruses, especially with practices such as indoor smoking.
Mistakes students make.
Badran drew attention to mistakes made by students that negatively affect their immunity, such as sleep disorders, neglecting proper nutrition, and eating iced drinks early in the morning, making them easy prey for infection.
Egyptian winter is a blessing.
Dr. Badran concluded by comparing the situation in Egypt with other countries, pointing out that the temperatures in some states of America are currently up to minus 15 degrees, yet life and study continue normally, and stressed that the winter of Egypt is considered moderate and distinctive, calling on citizens to correct their daily behaviors and live their lives naturally instead of hiding from the weather, to enhance their immunity and avoid diseases.
