Dr. Atef Mohamed Kamel writes... The role of civil society in protecting the ecosystem and biodiversity against climate change

Scientific article

Civil society plays a vital and effective role in the protection of biodiversity in the face of climate change, acting as a complementary partner to the efforts of Governments and the private sector. Its role is in several key areas: environmental awareness and capacity-building, monitoring of mitigation and adaptation violations: engaging in mitigation and adaptation efforts, such as the implementation of renewable energy projects or the management of solid residues, natural solutions (Nature-based Solutions - NbS) and community-based biodiversity protection.
The roles of civil society are:
1. Increasing community awareness:
- Awareness-raising campaigns and educational workshops to raise awareness of the importance of environmental protection and climate change.
Climate issues are included in school and university curricula.
Distribution of educational materials and guidance bulletins.
2. Outreach and capacity-building
- Dissemination of environmental awareness: Civil society conducts awareness-raising campaigns, workshops and educational events to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity and climate change risks to livelihoods and habitats.
Building community capacity: Communities, especially the most vulnerable in rural and coastal areas, help to understand the impact of climate change and build resilience, identify and preserve local biodiversity resources.
Three. Monitoring and advocacy
- Monitoring violations: participating in monitoring the implementation of environmental standards and policies and reporting on any violations that may affect the environment and biodiversity.
- Advocacy and pressure: It conducts advocacy campaigns to pressure decision makers to adopt more stringent and supportive environmental policies for climate action, and to end support for polluting industries.
Representing citizen concerns: acting as a channel of communication between individuals and public authorities, conveying citizens ' concerns and aspirations with regard to environmental issues.
4. Field work and project implementation
Field initiatives: launch environmental projects and initiatives on the ground, such as recycling projects, restoration of environmental systems, support for sustainable agriculture and the establishment of protected areas in cooperation with local communities.
Nature-based solutions: promote and implement nature-based solutions (NbS) aimed at restoring the environmental system, protecting biodiversity and addressing desertification, thereby ensuring community resilience.
